Practice of Zen at Edinburgh Fringe
The brief
With Jessie leading and James supporting, our team delivered media and industry relations for Hong Kong-based Theatre Ronin’s two-week Edinburgh Fringe run of Practice of Zen at theSpace on the Mile. Performed in Cantonese with English subtitles, the show blended choreography, martial arts, and folklore to explore Wuxia - a classic Chinese tale of ancient martial artists with extraordinary powers.
Our role
We set out to secure features, reviews, and coverage across online, print, and radio. The show and company were put forward for relevant awards and showcase opportunities at industry events and for other networking opportunities. During the run, we followed up with critics to encourage swift publication of their reviews.
The results
Practice of Zen received extensive media coverage and positive reviews from titles including Scottish Field, EdFringe Review, UK Theatre Web, Edinburgh Evening News, and The Student, among others. The show was praised for its unique blend of martial arts, choreography, and cultural storytelling.
Additional highlights included securing a performance slot at the Chinese Culture Week Opening Ceremony in Edinburgh, which featured distinguished guests from civic, cultural, and international communities, and a ’Highly Commended’ accolade from the Asian Arts Scotland Awards.
We noticed that the typical 24-hour turnaround for review publication was slower this year, possibly due to the record number of shows at the Fringe.
Testimonial
Both James and Jessie are very friendly and are attentive listeners who genuinely cared about our needs. They proactively suggested promotional strategies and connected us with relevant media contacts. Thanks to their support, we successfully secured theatre reviews and media coverage, which significantly contributed to our experience at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
