Behind the Curtain: Thriving At The Fringe
Putting on a successful Fringe show isn’t unlike assembling a jigsaw puzzle. Every piece, creative, strategic, and promotional, has to slot into place before the full picture emerges. Here, in five acts, with a final plot twist, is how we help productions build momentum to thrive at the Fringe.
Act I
Every project begins with total immersion. Whether it’s a script read-through or watching a recorded performance, we take the time to understand the heart of the show.
Act II
We have a one-hour Zoom call with the writer/creative team. This is where clarity begins to take shape. We ask targeted questions designed to uncover what success looks like for them.
These conversations often reveal the deeper layers of a production. As we explore motivations, influences, and backstories, compelling narratives begin to surface. In one recent call, a comedian shared a deeply personal story about coping with the loss of his brother. That honesty became central to how we positioned the show.
From this session, we begin shaping the foundations and identifying potential angles.
Act III
Early in the process, some questions can be surprisingly difficult to answer. Particularly, “Why should audiences see this show?” and “What makes it different?”
This is where we help refine the hook. We look for what sets a production apart, whether it’s a unique perspective, a bold format, or a timely theme. We also explore external opportunities: anniversaries, cultural moments, or topical connections that can elevate a show’s relevance.
For example, linking a project to a well-known literary milestone or “anniversary” can provide a valuable media hook. Alongside this, we brainstorm creative promotional tactics, from eye-catching photocalls to targeted invitations for media and industry professionals.
Act IV
With insights gathered, we turn to visual planning. Using tools like mind mapping, we plot the key elements of the show: its themes, strengths, and potential storylines. This is all about identifying what will resonate with audiences and the press. Which angles are newsworthy? What feels timely?

Act V
We begin drafting a media release. While structure and strategy guide us, human creativity is still at the core of our process. One of our team, Andy, turns what can be many ideas into an engaging first draft. This is shared with the creative team, and through collaboration, we ensure the final version reflects the show and its ambitions.
Plot Twist: Beyond the Press Release
Here’s the twist: success at the Fringe isn’t just about sending out a press release and hoping for the best. It’s about leveraging our networks and relationships, uncovering new angles, finding opportunities, and being relentlessly optimistic when pitching the client.
In the end, the goal isn’t just coverage, it's a connection: with audiences, critics, and the wider industry. That’s when you step back and see the bigger picture.
